How to Replace a Gear Motor

Replacing a gear motor requires more than matching the motor power. To ensure the new unit fits and operates correctly, you should verify the existing motor model, electrical specifications, output speed, gear ratio, mounting dimensions and shaft configuration before ordering a replacement.

If the original model is no longer available, these specifications can also be used to identify a compatible replacement gear motor.

1. Identify the Existing Gear Motor

Start by checking the nameplate on the existing gear motor. Record the manufacturer, model number and any available product code. If the label is damaged or unreadable, take clear photos of the motor, gearbox and mounting arrangement.

Check the rated power, voltage, frequency, phase and current of the existing motor. For variable-speed systems, also identify the controller or variable-frequency drive used with the motor.

Record the gearbox ratio and output speed whenever possible. The replacement gear motor should provide a similar output speed and sufficient output torque for the application.

Measure the flange size, mounting hole positions, bolt pattern and overall installation space. Even when two gear motors have similar power ratings, different mounting dimensions may prevent direct replacement.

Confirm the output shaft diameter, shaft length and shaft type. Also check whether the shaft uses a keyway, flat, spline or hollow-shaft connection.

Check whether the existing gear motor includes additional features such as a brake, speed controller, encoder, terminal box, right-angle gearbox or special protection rating. These features should also be considered when selecting a compatible replacement.

Before placing the order, compare the replacement model with the original motor in terms of voltage, power, output speed, gear ratio, mounting dimensions and shaft configuration. If the original model has been discontinued, send the nameplate photo, motor photos and key dimensions to the supplier for confirmation.

Send us the motor model, nameplate photo, voltage, gear ratio and mounting dimensions. Our team can help identify a suitable replacement gear motor.
